five fish can be traded for two loaves of bread and a loaf of bread can be traded for six bags of rice. How many bags of rice is one fish worth?

this problem is apart of my study guide for a very important test.

This is much harder having a lot of variables in play. One of my grade school students had this type of a problem and I don't think grade schoolers will follow substituion principle, let alone 3 variables.

You may be right.  Underlines don't work here.
What I do is use dashes on a second line due to that.
Then you get:

                 2 loaves.      6 rice
 (1 fish) x ------------ x ---------- = 2.4 bags of rice
                 5 fish           1 loaf

Of course, you have the same variables I do.
You merely left them spelled out.
