Indian Caste system, that is often thought to be associated with Hinduism, had been designed on the principles of division of labor in the society rather than as a part of religion. There are following four castes in descending order from upper to lower:
Brahmins: Educators and Priests, supposed to be content and generous in all kinds of teachings: science, language, philosophy, medicinal knowledge, ethics and so on.
Kshatriyas: Warriors, soldiers and builders, supposed to protect the country and communities and be brave to help in building after natural disasters, provide protection from invasion and keep the negative elements in check
Vaishyas: Traders and skilled work force, supposed to establish trade connections, provides goods and services to communities and families, explore far-away lands for farming and goods for trade enhancement
Shudras: Manual labor work force for cleaning, removing and disposing dead animals and humans and remain sub-subservient to skilled work force.
In ancient times, these cast division were based on people's nature and aptitude to help them make living while maintaining the peace and harmony in communities. Due to lack of education, it was easier to blend these divisions as part of religion, Hinduism, since god fearing people were likely to accept and follow those as religious ritual rather then enforcement from rulers. At the same time, there were lazy Brahmins, coward Kshatriyas, generous and brave vaishyas and Shudras. privileged did not want to give up their privilege regardless of their skilled set and less-privileged suffered since greedy Brahmins and selfish Kshatriyas tried to cover up their shortcomings under the label of "religion" while maintaining their "status quo."
When India was liberated from British regime, the govt. has tried to abolish caste system, Nevertheless, a conflict good and evil (traders of religion versus proponents of logical, educated interpretation of ancient culture) has continued in the society thereby complicating the relationship of caste system and religion.
Hope this is clear, if not then please post/ask again.
