Andy earns $157.50 for lifeguarding 18 hours. He receives a .40 raise per hour. Alana earns $95 for 10 hours. Who will earn the most for lifeguarding 25 hours?

Let x = the amount he earns each hour before hourly raise.

 

For each hour, Andy will actually earn 1.4x.

 

Then,    1.4x(18) = 157.50

 

Solving for x,

 

x = 6.25

 

Multiply this by 1.4 to get $8.75

 

 

So Andy earns $8.75 per hour.

 

Alena earns $9.50 per hour.

 

 

If you multiply their hourly rates by 25, you will find the amount they earn in 25 hours.  Compare to see who's is larger.
