Ashley Berry and Kelly have change in their pockets Ashley has three times as much money as Barry and twice as much money as Kelly together they have $0.55 how much money does Barry have

there are three components of the total.   Ashley: 3b   Barry: b  Kelly: k.

AND Ashley has twice as much as Kelly so 3b = 2k.  Therefore b = (2/3)k.

 

4b+k = 55 (cents) ... altogether; substituting for b ⇒ 4(2/3)k + k = 55.

 

(8/3)k + k = 55     (11/3)k = 55    k = (3/11)(55)    k = 15
