if y varies directly as x, and y=3 when x=2, find y when x=12

y = k * X where  k is a fixed number constant

 

3 = k * 2 ---> k = 3/2

 

So the function is y = 3/2*X

 

 when x=12, y = 3/2*12 = 36/2 = 18
