The northeastern part of the United States, such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, used to be known as the "rust belt" because of the large number of manufacturing plants located there. This is an example of an economic region. The coal mining towns in the Appalachian Mountains are another example of an economic region, although a distressed one right now. This area is dominated by one single industry, and coal serves as the "life engine" for these rural areas in West Virginia and surrounding communities.
