f(x) = 3x² + x - 7

 

The notation f(-3) means f(x=-3).  So all you have to do is set the x equal to -3 in the equation and compute the answer:

 

f(-3) = 3(-3)² + (-3) - 7

f(-3) = 3(9) - 3 - 7 = 27 - 10 = 17
