total length(T) = piece 1(p1) plus piece 2(p2) T=x p1=3 and p2= 2x-17
The equation becomes x = 3 + 2x -17, 3-17=-14
Therefore the equation becomes x = 2x -14
add 14 to both sides then the equation is x + 14 = 2x
subtract x from both sides the equation becomes x = 14
The poles is 14 meters long
as a check the original equation is 14 = 3 + 2(14) -17
14= 3 + 28 -17 = 3+11 = 14
