What is the significance of the first and last codons of an mRNA transcript?

Can anyone help me with this

Bob A.

I am making this a comment since I do not 100% remember from my bio-chem 40 odd years ago.  But -  Most codes and every message transmitted across the internet have a Start and Stop marker.  I believe the mRNA has them too.  Else how would the replication know where different messages were on the string.
