Ichnofossils are not remains of organisms, but rather marks made by them in mud, which later mineralizes. For example, a dinosaur that steps across a muddy plain may have its tracks fossilized. Despite the fact that the dinosaur itself is not part of these fossils, the marks left by it, the imprints in the mineral, are still considered fossils.

 

Ichnofossils are also known as trace or imprint fossils.
