You can solve using the quadratic formula.
x2 - 10x - 21 = 0
a = 1
b = -10
c = -21
x= (1/2a)[-b ± √(b2 - 4ac)] = (1/2)[10 ± √(100 + 84)] = 5 ± √46

x2 - 10x + 25 = 21 + 25 complete the square
(x - 5)2 = 46
x - 5 = ±√46
x = 5 ± √46
