1st grade word problem.

Question

Keith has more than 70 cents but less than 90 cents. Hey buys one of the food items (orange for 30 cents, pear for 43 cents or bananas for 60 cents). He has 12 cents left. Which food does he buy?

Assume he has x cents initially, with x between 70 and 90.

 

Orange:

 

x - 30 = 12

x = 12 + 30 = 42 (not between 70 and 90)

 

Pear:

 

x - 43 = 12

x = 12 + 43 = 55 (not between 70 and 90)

 

Banana:

 

x - 60 = 12

x = 12 + 60 = 72 (between 70 and 90)

 

Only the banana puts his initial amount between 70 and 90, so you can conclude he bought the banana.
