Monica picked apples on Saturday. When she got home she gave 1/4 of the apples to her aunt. Then she gave her grandfather 1/2 of what was left. She has 15 apples left for herself. How many apples did Monica pick? How many apples did Monica give to her relatives?

She gave 1/4 to her aunt.  She then had 3/4 left.

She gave 1/2 of that to her grandfather.  1/2 * 3/4 = 3/8

Total she gave away was:

1/4 + 3/8 = 5/8

She then had 1 - 5/8 left for herself:

1 - 5/8 = 3/8 = 15

3/8 * P = 15   (P is the total picked.)

P = 15 * 8/3 = 40.

Monica picked 40 apples.

Her aunt got 1/4 * 40 = 10  (30 apples left)

Her grandfather got 1/2 * 30 = 15

She gave her relatives 25 apples.
