I only say it's negative because we are losing height off the candle. Then, what we are trying to find is how long the candle will take for it take reach 1in tall.

 

So the equation we can set up is:

 

12in - 3/4(in/hr)x = 1in

 

Where we are trying to solve for x. 

 

12in - 1in = 3/4(in/hr)x

 

11in = 3/4(in/hr)x

 

x = 4/3(hr/in) * (11in)  ; inches crosses out

 

x = 44/3 hr
