The sum of the speeds of two trains is 721.6 miles Per hour. if the speed of  first train is 2.4 miles faster than the second train, find the speeds of each

and then the speed of Train #1 = x + 2.4

x + x + 2.4  = 721.6

 

2x + 2.4 = 721.6

 

2x = 721.6 - 2.4

 

2x = 719.2

 

x = 719.2/2

 

x = 359.6 mi/hr

 

We made "x" the speed of Train #2

 

The speed of Train #1 is 2.4mi/hr faster..

 

359.6 + 2.4 = 362 mi/hr

x = y + 2.4

 

Since the sum of the two trains is 721.6 mph. We can come up with an expression for this:

 

x + y = 721.6 mph

 

(y + 2.4) + y = 721.6

 

2y = 721.6 - 2.4

 

2y = 719.2

 

y = 719.2 / 2

 

y = 359.6 mph
