26/40 = x/100 set up as a ratio and proportion type equation. 26 is to 40 as x is to 100.
why 100? because 100 is the basis for percent.
solve the equation for x and we get 65.
26/40 = x/100
crossmultiply......26*100=40*x
divide both sides by 40.....(26*100)/40=40x/40
65 =x
so 65/100 = .65 or 65%
