Andrea keys in 12/6 X 2 on her calculator and expects the result to be 1? why doesn't the calucater show the answer to be one? Explain what Andrea sees on the  Calculator with the way that she input it, and then use appropriate steps to represent the order of operations necessary to achieve the result of 1. Do not change the numbers in the expression. Simply use a tool from the order of operations to correct it and rewrite the expression as it should be input to the calculator

Carolyn, Andrea is misunderstanding the order of operations and forgetting that it's "multiplation and division from left to right."

 

The calculator is going to do 12/6 x 2 = 2 x 2 = 4.

 

In order to get 1, we need 12/12, and the way to do that is by grouping 6 x 2 together, because we do parentheses first.

 

12/(6 x 2) = 12/12 = 1
