Approximately how many voters in town will vote for Thompson?

A newspaper takes a random sample of 140 voters in a town with 3,500 registered voters. In the sample 67 voters said they would vote for Thompson. Approximately how many voters in town will vote for Thompson?

Paul, I suggest that you read  my answer carefully. The usage of a proportion is inappropriate because it contains the implicit assumption that all of the registered voters will vote. 
 
Math teachers often make word problems trying to be realistic, but omit certain facts from the world of experience (i.e. common sense). That is why I dislike the CommonCore world so much--it has shunted aside proven textbooks designed by mathematicians in favor of hot-off-the-presses made-for-profit material. That stuff is often not properly vetted.
