Algebra 1 Word Equation

A school sells t-shirts for $8 and sweatshirts for $12. If the total amount sold is 37 items and there is a $376 profit, how many sweatshirts and tshirts were sold?

Gene G.

Important note:
If they really mean "profit" instead of "total receipts", you would also need the cost that the school paid for each type of shirt. That would change the equations a little, but the solution method  would be similar. The profits would be (8-cost)(T) and (12-cost)(S).

Good point Gene.  I  almost mentioned that "profit" is not really the proper term, but in my solution i just enclosed it in double quotes.  I was pretty sure the problem statement meant total receipts, but it is unfortunate that such terms are not used precisely.
