Arc length and area of a sector question:

3. A radar system has been set up to track approaching weather storms, The radar is set to reach 350 miles and cover an arc of 150 degrees. Find the arc length and the area of the sector that the radar covers.

James:  the arc length,s, is 150/360th of the circumference.  So,                       s = (150/360)(2π)(350) = (350)(150π/180) = rθ.

James:  The area of the sector, A, is proportional to the area of the entire circle.  The radian measure of 150 degrees is 5π/6.
 
A/(πr2) = (5π/6)/(2π)
 
So, A = (1/2)(πr2)(5/6) = (1/2)r2(5π/6) = (1/2)r2(5π/6) = (1/2)r2θ.  Plug in 350 for r to get your answer.
