Prenatal care is the regular medical and health guidance a mother receives during pregnancy. It ensures both the health of the mother and the developing baby. Proper prenatal care helps detect complications early, provides guidance on nutrition and lifestyle, and supports emotional well-being. Mothers taking care of themselves reduces risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, and maternal complications.
Two Recommended Interventions / Precautions are:
- Regular Prenatal Checkups - Visiting a healthcare provider routinely throughout pregnancy (usually every 4–6 weeks initially, then more frequently in the third trimester. This is important, because it monitors the baby’s growth and development, detects complications early, such as gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or infections, and provides guidance on vaccinations, supplements, and lifestyle adjustments.
- Proper Nutrition and Prenatal Vitamins - Eating a balanced diet rich in proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and taking prenatal vitamins containing folic acid, iron, and calcium. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects, iron supports healthy blood volume and prevents anemia. Adequate nutrition ensures the baby’s proper growth and brain development and reduces maternal fatigue.
