Well, if you think about it, it's easier to work first in just hour-intervals. 

 

So you start at 9:30 am.

 

Add one hour, you get 10:30 am. 

Add one more hour, you get 11:30 am. 

 

Then to get to 12:00 pm, you have to work in smaller intervals, and from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm, you have 30 minutes.

 

So in total, you added 2 hours and 30 minutes to get from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm.
