Oceanside bike rental shop charges twelve dollars plus eight dollars an hour for renting a bike. Mary paid fifty-two dollars to rent a bike. How many hours did she pay to have the bike checked out?

12 + 8x = 52

If one hour costs $8 + $12 = $20, and two hours costs $12 + $8 * 2 = $28, then $8 * h + 12 = the cost of h hours. We can use this equation to calculate h.

 

8h + 12 = 52

 

8h = 40

 

h = 5 hours
