Earth core is made of molten iron at high temperature. Due to difference in temperatures and pressures within the core, the iron flows which produces electric currents which in turn produce the magnetic field for the earth.
Two benefits of the field are:
1-protection from harmful radiation. Charged particles are forced to go around the earth because of the magnetic belt.
2-protection from solar wind.
