A 42-inch board is to be cut into three pieces so that the second piece is twice as long as the first piece and the third piece is 4 times as long as the first piece. If x represents the length of the first piece, find the lengths of all three pieces.

Answer 1

Piece 1 = x

Piece 2 = 2x

Piece 3 = 4x

 

x + 2x + 4x = 42

 

Solve for x to get the length of 1st piece

 

Multiply that by 2 to get length of 2nd piece

 

Multiply x by 4 to get length of 3rd piece

 

Note:  All units are in inches

Answer 2

 

4x+2x+x=42

x=6

 

1st=6in

2nd=12in

3rd=24in
