Word problem

there are 3:5 ratio of boys to girls. If there are 300 more girls how many boys are there

You could also start from:
 
b/g = 3/5
rewritten this is:
 
3g = 5b   or   -5b + 3g = 0
 
Thus your initial equations could be:
 
1)  -5b + 3g = 0
2)  g = b + 300
 
From their either do the substitution again or rearrange the 2nd
equation to -b + g = 300   and do elimination.
You still get 450 boys and 750 girls
