The rate of change evaluated at a particular point is a number, but the general form of the rate of change depends on the variable, which is what I was trying to illustrate with my answer.  (By the way, I did not cast the down vote.  I noticed the same problem we discussed before, namely some correct answers being voted down frivolously, which I saw at least once in a solution to another problem).
