The Colonies were suffering unjustly under the rule of England. The Declaration of Independence has a very long list of grievances that were felt very deeply (see Wikipedia). "Give me liberty or give me death" (who said?) is not a naïve statement.
The possible outcomes of no war: (1) remain Colonies, (2) remain Colonies.
The possible outcomes of war: (1) independence, (2) remain Colonies.
Actually, hindsight gives lots and lots for us to be thankful for. Oh, yes, you might really appreciate Paul Harvey's ("The Rest of the Story") account of what happened to those who "pledged our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor."
