A rectangular area is to be fenced in along a straight river bank as illustrated. The length of the fenced-in area is to be 44 feet greater than the width, and the total amount of fencing to be used is 9494 feet. Find the width and length of the fenced-in area.

2w + 2(w + 44) = 9494

2w + 2w + 88 = 9494

4w = 9406

w = 2351.5

 

2351.5 + 44 = 2395.5

 

The width is 2351.5 and the length is 2395.5.
