I don't get what I'm doing in my math class. i need help solving this problem that my math teacher gave me to do for homework.

What you have here is a quadratic (polynomial of degree two) and values a, b and c are the coefficients 4, -4 and constant -24, respectively in this case.

 

The discriminant is computed as b²-4ac.  Sound familiar?  You can Google DISCRIMINANT (be sure to spell correctly) and find lots of info on it. Its value is a harbinger of the kind of roots (zeros) that the quadratic will have.
