The area of any rectangle is length x width. Because the sides of the square are equal, length and width will have the same value. Use the variable S for side length and your equation for the area will be S x S = 479.
This is the same as saying S "squared" = 479 (S2 = 479).
Just like the opposite of multiplication is division, the opposite of a "square" is a "square root" (the "square root" is the number that, when multiplied by itself, will give you the "square" as the answer).
(1) If you are allowed to use a calculator, you would just use the square root function on your calculator to take the square root of 479 in order to find the length of one side.
(2) If your teacher is wanting you to use trial and error, then you would have to figure out perfect squares larger and smaller than 479 until you reached the right answer. So you can start with 20 feet x 20 feet = 400 square feet. You know this is a little too low, so next you try 30 feet x 30 feet = 900 square feet which is way too high. You can see that the answer will most likely be closer to 20 x 20 than it is to 30 x 30, so next you can try 22 x 22 and 21 x 21. Since your answer is supposed to be in whole feet not fractions of a foot, whichever of these is closest would be your estimate.
