Percentage and Numbers

There are 100 items in a garage sale. 3o% of the items are sold during the first hour of the sale. If 10 items are sold during the secound hour, what persent of the items have not been sold?

The starting point is to make sure you understand the question. From my looking at it, the way to start is by setting up the equation it is telling you. and then solve for the term c.
 
[(a+b)/2]= [(a+b+c)/3]
 
step one, locate c.
step 2, multiply both sides by 3. 
(3a+3b)/2
 
step 3, subtract a
step 4, subtract b
 
and simplify. (2a+2b)/2 = a+b

If the average of a and b equals the average of a, b, and c, then express c in terms of a and b.

"If the average of a and b equals the average of a, b, and c"    means
            (      a    +  b) / 2     =               (a  +  b  +  c  ) / 3
    because average is the sum of the numbers over the count of the numbers
 
(a+b)/2 = (a+b+c)/3
3(a+b) = 2(a+b+c)                [cross-multiply]
 3a + 3b =2a + 2b + 2c             [distribute]
   a + b = 2c                        [subtract (2a+2b) from both sides]
   (a+b)/2 = c                [divide both sides by 2]
  c = (a+b)/2               [write in reverse]
     [note: the parentheses are very important]
 
This says that:   to maintain the same average, the single new number must equal the average already calculated.
