Solve the absolute value equation [x] = 3

Do not use square brackets for the absolute value (square brackets mean the Greatest Integer Function, a.k.a., the Floor Function).
 
Use abs(x) or vertical bars |x|. On my computer the vertical bar is above the backslash.
