Chloride ions (Cl-) are negatively charged. They have gained an extra electron, giving them a negative charge. In chemistry, ions are classified based on whether they have lost or gained electrons. In the case of chloride ions, they have gained an electron from a neutral chlorine atom, resulting in a negative charge.
Chlorine has 7 valence electrons in its valence shell thus it gains one more electron to complete octet and become more stable.
