We have a quadratic
x2 - 2x - 5 = 0
Use the quadratic formula
x = [-b±√(b2-4ac)]/2a ; a=1, b=-2, c=-5
x = [2±√((-2)2-4(1)(-5))]/2
x = [2±√24]/2
x =(2±2√6)/2
x = 1 ± √6
Since we know x must be positive we can discard 1-√6
x = 1 + √6
