If a force on an object is unbalanced, that means there is no equal and opposite force acting on the object, resulting in a net force, and subsequently, causing a net acceleration in the direction of the net force.
Example:
Consider an object what weighs 10 pounds hanging from a vertical cable, and the cable has a tension of 7 pounds. Then the object has an upward force of 7 pounds on it, and a downward force of 10 pounds. The upward force does not balance the downward force, so there is a net downward force of 3 pounds on the object, and hence a net downward acceleration on it.
