Coin Solving Problem

Question

There are four times as many nickels as there are dimes in a coin bank. The coins have a total value of $6.00 (600 cents) . Find the number of nickels. Write an equation and solve!!!

Let X equal number of dimes, then 4X would be the number of nickels.

Then X times 10 cents plus 4X times 5 cents should add up to $6.00

So, the equation is:  10 X + 5 (4X) = 600, then 10 X + 20 X = 600, 30 X = 600, X = 20. So, we have 20 dimes and 4X20, or 80 nickels: $2 in dimes and $4 in nickels, a total of $6.
