The latest online craze is a new game,khan on seven. You get 100 points for playing the game. In addition, you get 50 points for each seven letter word you are able to make with ten letters you are given. The game leader currently had 17,950 points. Sal wants to break the record, and needs 18,000 points or more to do so. Write an inequality to determine how many seven-letter words, w, sal will need to make to break the record

"You get 100 points for playing the game"             Start with 100

"50 points for each seven letter word"              Add 50n

     note: points = (50 points/word)*(number of words)

 

Sal's points must "break the record" (that is "18,000 points to do so")

        Sal:     100 + 50n ≥ 1800            [n=number of seven-letter words made)

 

This may be reduced by subtracting +100 (thus, retain sense of inequality) from both sides:

             50n ≥ 1700

then dividing both sides by 50 (thus, retain sense of inequality):

              n ≥ 34    [read this as "at least 34 words"]
