I think you're asking how to find the range between 70 degrees in July and -18 degrees in January. you Here's how:
70 - (-18) = 70 + 18 = 88.
To find the range between two numbers, you find the difference, or subtract them. When you find the difference between a positive and negative number you add the two numbers. It might be helpful to think of a number line. -18 is 18 units to the left of zero. 70 is 70 units to the right of 0. To find the distance, or range, you have to add 70 and 18.
To answer the question you've written, though, we need more information:
Is July the warmest moth in Calgary? Is January the coldest month there?
Are you looking for the average range? Or are you looking for the range of temperatures recorded in a time period (for example, a year, a decade, or since records have been kept)?
