a circular pond will be placed on a square peice of land. the length of a side of the square is 2x. the radius of the pond is x. the part of the square not covered by the pond will be planted with flowers.

To find the area planted with flowers, we subtract the difference between the area of the square, and the pond enclosed withiin it.

 

SQUARE:  Area = length • Width 

                        = (2x)(2x)

                        = 4x²

 

CIRCLE:  Area = pi • r²

                      = pi • x²

 

DIFFERENCE = 4x² - pi • x²

 

Thus the area planted with flowers is 4x² - pi • x²
