Yusof wants to fence a rectangular garden by the side of a wall. The fencing is used to make 3 sides of the garden. No fencing is used on the side of the wall. Given the total length of fencing used is 30 m and the difference of length and width of the garden is 6 m. Find the area, in m², of the garden.

Shall we asume that L is Length and it's greater than the width so the perimeter of fencing is L + W +W = 30 m?

 

So Width W = L - 6   ⇐ "difference of length and width of the garden is 6 m."

 

2W = 30 - L;  therefore W = 15 - ½(L) = L - 6

 

Solving for L: 21 = (3/2)L   so L = (2/3) 21;   L = 14.  This gives W = 8 

 

Overall dimensions are Length 14 m, Width 8 meters, total (3 sides) perimeter = 30 m and thus the area 

LW = 14(8) =112 square meters.
