Two word problems. Need help with step by step answer to see where I went wrong

Question

Joe is buying new carpet for his basement. If the room measures 23.2 feet by 15.8 feet and the carpet costs $7.50 per square foot what will he pay?

 

Jill is buying new tile for her bathroom. If the room measures 8 2/3 by 6 3/4 feet and the tile costs $8 per square foot what will she pay?

Answer 1

The cost in dollars is equal to (area in square feet)*(cost per square foot).  Note that square feet cancel out, leaving only dollars.  Remember, the area is the length * width.

 

Joe is buying new carpet for his basement. If the room measures 23.2 feet by 15.8 feet and the carpet costs $7.50 per square foot what will he pay?

       Cost = (23.2 ft * 15.8 ft)*($7.50 / sq ft) = $2749.20

Jill is buying new tile for her bathroom. If the room measures 8 2/3 by 6 3/4 feet and the tile costs $8 per square foot what will she pay?

 

      Cost = (8 2/3 ft * 6 3/4 ft)*($8 / sq ft)

              = (26/3 ft * 27/4 ft)*($8 / sq ft)             [convert to improper fractions]

              = $468                                             [note how values calcel]

First calculate the square feet by multiplying the length and width and then multiply by the cost per square foot to find out the total amount paid. 

 

Here is the first one. 

Area=23.2*15.8=356.56sq ft

Cost=356.56*7.5=$2749.20
