Hi Samantha-- in order to solve this question, follow the steps below: Remember your order of operations (PEMDAS) and start by getting rid of the parentheses! 

 

1. Distribute the 11 to both terms in the parentheses on the left side of the equation.

11 (3-y) would become 33-11y on the left

 

2. Distribute the 6 to both terms in the parentheses on the right side of the equation.

6(y-3) would become 6y-18 

 

3. Put the equation back together!

33-11y> 6y-18

 

4. Combine like terms--add 18 on the right side of the equation (what you do to one side, you must do to the other), then also add it to the 33 on the right side of the equation...so you are left with: 

 

51 - 11y > 6y

 

5. Continue combining like terms by adding 11y to the left and the right side of the equation (add it to the 6y you already have on the right). 

 

You should now have: 

51 > 17y

 

6. Divide both sides by 17

 

The solution is

 

3> y 

 

or y< 3
