An earthquake has occurred. You have information from three recording stations as to the earthquake’s location. The locations are given as if a coordinate plane has been laid over a map:

Station #1: Located at (0, 0), Earthquake was √40 miles away

Station #2: Located at (5, 6), Earthquake was 3 miles away

Station #3: Located at (-1, 11), Earthquake was √34 miles away


What would this look like in standard form?
What would be the point of intersection?

Answer 1

1) x² + y² = 40

2) (x - 5)² + (y - 6)² = 9

3) (x + 1)² + (y - 11)² = 34

 

Expand #2 and #3, substitute #1 into both.

Use elimination of substitution to determine x or y.
