Perhaps the "freind" actually phrased the question as something like "What does 'the 1950s' reference in the United States?" If so, then this would appear to be leading toward an answer involving the general perception of that decade as being one of security, economic prosperity and conformity and conservatism in social mores, in short an "idyllic" period, at least in the view of some. This is reflected in statements Americans sometimes make like "He wants to take us back to the 1950s," which might be spoken of a political candidate with conservative, if not reactionary, economic and particularly social views and positions.
