There are different ecological niches for earthworms, defined by how deeply they penetrate the soil. The word niche refers to a different resource (food type, living space, etc) that organisms use. This allows them to coexist in one habitat without competing with each other. Epigeic earthworms exist only on the soil surface and consume mainly leaf litter. Endogeic earthworms make horizontal burrows within the soil but come up to the top. They eat soil. Anecic worms, which eat both litter and soil, create deeper burrows that extend vertically.
