Me and my friends can't seem to get the right answer. We know what it is but we can't figure out how to get it. "Alex and Bridget are driving golf carts in the same direction on the same path. Alex's cart is going 4 mph. And Bridget's cart is going 6 mph. Alex passes a lemonade stand at 8:16 am and Bridget passes it at 8:30 am. When will bridget catch up to Alex?

Alex is 14 minutes (8:30 - 8:16) ahead of Bridget.

For him that is (14/60)(4) miles, or 14/15 mile

 

Alex: d = 4(t)

Bridget: d + 14/15 = 6(t), or d = 6t - 14/15

 

4t = 6t - 14/15

-2t = -14/15

t = 7/15

 

7/15 hour is 28 minutes.

 

Bridget catches up at 8:44 (8:16 + 0:28).
