How would you work out how long she spent each day studying?

Over a three day long weekend, Pam spent an average of 4 hours a day studying for her pilot licence examination. She spent twice as long studying on Saturday as she had on Sunday. She spent 3 hours studying on Monday. How long did she spend studying each day?

Let x = how long she spent on Sunday.

 

Then 2x is how long she spent studying on Saturday.  She spent an average of 4 hours which yields the equation

 

(  2x + x  + 3 ) / 3  = 4  Solve for x

 

3x +  3  =  12  or x =3  So she spent 6 hours on Sunday and 3 hours on both Sunday and Monday which averages out to 4 hours.
