Algebra ratio

There are 3/5 as many apples as oranges.
Apples = 3/5 x
Oranges = x
Apples : Oranges
 3/5 x   :    x
   3x     :    5x

Can I use this ratio to solve math problem?  Pls help me.  Thanks a lot.

The other information I am given is :  Total fruits = 40
                                                                   8x = 40
                                                                     x = 5
                                Thus number of apples   = 3 x 5 =15
                                 Number of oranges       =  5 x5 =25
Thanks.  I can solve the math problem now.
