What is a radical?

I am in honors geometry, and we just went over sines, cosines, and tangents, but I just don't get radicals.

Note that sqrt(x^2) is identically equal to absolute value of x.
√(x2) = |x|
If you have even roots of even powers you must use absolute value.
E.g., try x = -2.
